ZRU President’s Message

Team-building, Tactics, Speed, Strength, Determination and Discipline! – comes to mind when exploring the game of rugby in Zambia and this has been our secret. The year 2017 has left fondest memories in the history of rugby in Zambia and 2018 has been a pivotal year.

I express my gratitude for the team drive from the executive, the oneness that has even trickled down to the field of play among players, thus producing very positive results. This is a feat that has to be maintained.

At developmental level through a world rugby programme known as “Get into Rugby” – GIR, rugby is being introduced in primary schools and in various communities through our dedicated team of volunteers and charities that visit Zambia. With this effort in place, the catchment area is now wider and offers sponsors the exposure that sponsorship comes with. Beyond the values it conveys, rugby can be a key catalyst for development among children, women, men and clubs. This deserves to be acknowledged all over the country.

In 2006, rugby was introduced to women in Zambia. Today, Women Rugby is something worth talking about and they are playing rugby competitively. Huge strides have been taken by Zambia Rugby Union and its members, and this embraces the sponsors. With more sponsors coming on board, we will be able to step up the sport of rugby and better contribute to the enhancement of the sport in youths and women in 7s and 15s.

ZRU is enjoying itself with the utmost progress and developments in the game of rugby.  The partnership represents the highest level of sponsorship, and marks a major milestone in this sport of rugby. It was important for us to team up with the ideal partners, companies sharing the values of integrity, respect, tolerance, discipline and passion commonly associated with rugby. The support ZRU receives from stakeholders help shape the future of the sport in Zambia and is helping in reinforcing the efforts to continuously promote rugby throughout the country and genuinely establish it as a sport for all Zambians.

In addition to the exciting 2017 and 2018 tournaments, the Africa Gold, Silver and Bronze Cups and the four regional tournaments among them, Zambia participated in the 2018 Gold Coast 21st Commonwealth Games in Queensland, Australia. Anxiously, we looked forward to thrilling action, great crowds, a wonderful party atmosphere, top class entertainment, and all in a superb, purpose-built venue – Robina Stadium – as Zambia played New Zealand, Canada and Kenya in Pool C.

More blessings for Zambian rugby were experienced in the course of 2018! Upgraded to Gold, visit by the president of Africa Rugby Abdelaziz Bougja and world class female rugby player Grace Hamilton.

Kindly, allow me to thank event organizers and sevens management team, R & G Sports Management and Mopani for their tireless efforts in ensuring that our dream for the sevens and fifteens come to fruition. As a team, I have no doubt in mind that sooner or later we shall have the Zambian flag flying higher through rugby achievements. To the Zambian rugby fraternity, fans and sponsors at various levels, we thank you for your continued support.

Thank you,
